The Good: The quality of the drawing and similarity to the original images is incredible.
The Bad: We went with the 16 x 12 and it’s too small. I wish we had done with 24 x 18 (or possibly even a larger size if they had it).
The Pawtom Line: This is one of the coolest pet products I’ve ever owned. It’s likely I’ll get one made for all of our dogs going forward.
At first I was a little hesitant to review a dog portrait product because it doesn’t directly relate to “outdoor dog world” activities (i.e. hiking, swimming, etc.), but I’ve been hearing about them from our readers and friends quite a bit.
After going through the process it’s easily the best product we’ve ever reviewed.
The pictures in this article won’t do it justice; I struggled to take a picture without the glare of the frame. Keep that in mind, but I want to show a side by side comparison (the finished portrait is at the top of the article).

The Process
The West & Willow website gives more details, but it’s really as easy as:
- Pick a good photos of your dog (this was the hardest part)
- Upload it to West & Willow
- Choose your frame and background color
- Verify your dog’s name
- Order (get 15% off if you use “PAWFRIENDS15” when you checkout)
How are the portraits created?
I emailed West & Willow after the review and here was my exact comment:
“Are these hand-drawn (digitally) from scratch? Or are the photos uploaded and manipulated? I only ask, because the final product really does look exceptional.”
They confirmed “these are hand-illustrated using advanced computer software. We use the pet photo as inspiration and a guide.”
What portrait options are there?
As you can see above we went with the 16 x 12 two pet portrait. This is not an exhaustive list, but here’s the basic options:
Single pet portrait
- Sizes: 8 x 10, 12 x 16, 18 x 24
- Frame: black, white, no frame
- Background: soft white, dusty pink, charcoal gray
Two pet portrait
- Sizes: 16 x 12, 24 x 18
- Frame: black, white, no frame
- Background: soft white, dusty pink, charcoal gray
What sets West & Willow apart from other competitors in the space?
They are all about a modern aesthetic.
Here’s the founders description that I think fits best: “Many pet portrait brand position themselves as a great gift — West & Willow is a great gift and a great design piece for your home.”
