Pool Safety
Pools are great for a quick cool-off, especially during the sweltering summer months. However, keep in mind that not all dogs are naturally strong swimmers.
I’ll never forget our family dog, Rocky, taking a confident dive into our backyard pool. He swam around for a while, happy as a clam, but eventually his gusto dwindled. He was tuckered out and seemed to forget how to navigate back to the shallow end steps. He started whining and I could see him slowing down.
That’s when I jumped in and helped him to the steps. He clambered up, wagging his wet tail in gratitude. It was a potent reminder that while dogs can be natural swimmers, they aren’t always self-aware enough to understand that they need to get out before they get tired. It’s never a bad idea of add a couple ramps to your pool!
When it comes to ramps or steps, consider your pet’s size, the product’s durability, and its ease of use. Some of our favorites are listed below.
Remember, after each pool swim, rinse your dog with fresh water. Chlorine, while great for keeping pool water clean, can irritate a dog’s skin and eyes.

Open Water Safety
For those moments when you’re venturing to a lake, river, or beach, always make sure the swimming area is safe. Currents, tides, and aquatic life can be hazardous, so only let your dog swim in areas that are safe for humans.
In open water scenarios, a canine lifejacket is an essential piece of gear. It provides an added layer of safety for your dog, ensuring they stay afloat even if they tire out or are caught by a current.
Boating Safety
If boating is your adventure of choice, remember this mantra – Lifejackets aren’t just for humans. Unexpected situations may lead to your dog ending up in the water, so equipping them with a lifejacket is a must.
Keeping them close by or on a leash so they don’t fall or jump overboard is also important.

Let’s not forget about sun safety. Just like humans, dogs can get sunburnt, too. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen on vulnerable areas like the belly, ears, and nose. Remember to provide shade and fresh drinking water to prevent dehydration and provide a respite from the sun.

Be Vigilant
Keep a close eye on your dog while they’re in or near the water. Excessive panting, drooling, or fatigue are signs that your dog needs a break. Promptly get them out of the water if they show signs of distress.
