Hypo-allergenic Dogs
A hypoallergenic dog is a dog that is considered less likely to trigger an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to dog allergens. So, it makes sense to believe you need to have a hypoallergenic dog to prevent allergies. Unfortunately, this is only partially true. While hypoallergenic dogs are less likely to trigger allergies, they still have the ability to cause them through fur, dried skin (called dander), or even saliva.
Low Shedding Dogs
There are no dogs that will not shed at all, unless hairless. Even with hair, the dander and saliva can also can cause irritation for those with allergies! When people say they do not want a dog that sheds, they may be looking for is a “low shed” dog. A low shed dog has a single layer coat that sheds far less than dogs with double layer coats. For example, golden retrievers, collies, huskies or any dog that has a double layer coat for warmth will shed as often as the temperature changes. Breed, health issues, and stress are also factors that increase shedding. Schnauzers, greyhounds, or other dogs that have shorter hair will not shed nearly as much due to their ability to regulate their temperature more easily.
Bottom line, a hypoallergenic or low shed (single coat) dog will serve the same purpose – both will have less shedding!
