There are few things quite as nice as having a companion for your outdoor activities like running and hiking – and there are few companions as fun to have around as a small, loyal dog!
They may be small, weighing only twenty (20) pounds or less, but having these little dogs by your side can amp up your outdoor workout and they are also the perfect companions for when you get home.
These small-but-mighty dog breeds can carry their weight and are the perfect companions for any outdoor adventures you strike out on.
1. Miniature Pinscher
Miniature Pinschers (or Min Pins, as they’re affectionately called) are tiny versions of their full-sized Pinscher cousins. As such, they are very energetic and athletic. They’re also fearless, so they’ll double as great watchdogs. In fact, they’re so popular that they’re even called the “King of the Toys!”
2. Beagle
The beagle is one of the smallest breeds of hound dogs around, but they make up for their small size by bringing a ton of happy energy to your outdoor adventures. They were originally bred to hunt in packs, so they love to be by your side and can keep up well on your long-distance hikes and runs.
3. Miniature Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds are known as some of the most high-energy dogs around because of their history of working on the farms, and their miniature versions are no different. These smaller dogs range from 20-40 pounds but are extremely rugged and bright. They also need a ton of exercise, so they’ll benefit from having an owner who regularly puts them to work.
4. Shetland Sheepdog
Another popular herding dog, Shetland Sheepdogs (or Shelties) are quick, loyal, and hardworking. They were bred for hard outdoor work, are excellent watchdogs, and are great at agility and other outdoor activities – perfect for taking on your nature hikes and running around with.
5. Dachshund
They may be small, but they’re mighty: these low-to-the-ground hunting dogs are excellent to take on your hikes because of their tenacity. They’re not great running companions because of their build, but they’re the perfect small dog for hiking and hitting the trails.
6. Jack Russell Terrier
These bright, spunky terriers were bred for foxhunts, and their tireless energy translates well to anyone looking for an outdoor companion. They require a ton of exercise, so they’re best suited for individuals and families who plan on taking them out for daily walks or runs.
7. Miniature Schnauzer
Mini Schnauzers are great outdoor companions. Just like many small terriers, they were bred for rat hunting and as such have a ton of energy that is well-expended in the great outdoors. They’re also very sturdy and friendly, while still having great potential as watchdogs because of their alertness.
8. West Highland White Terrier
Westies are a fan-favorite for small dog lovers because of their high energy plus they’re cute to boot. They were bred for vermin hunting and enjoy being outdoors, but they’ll need to be well-trained to overcome their strong prey drive while outside. They’re also very intelligent, which makes them great as an overall family dog.
9. Schipperke
Schipperkes are gaining popularity in the small dog world for their lively spirit and high energy levels. They’re small, but sturdy, and need a lot of exercise and room for exploring and playing.
10. Miniature Bull Terrier
These mini versions of the Bull Terrier have all the energy and mischievousness of their regular-sized counterparts, so they’ll be able to keep up well on the trail. They also need a lot of exercise, so they’re great for anyone who finds themselves on the move often.
11. Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Corgis are an incredibly popular small dog breed, and for good reason. These herding dogs are watchful and surprisingly resilient. They might be short, but they are very athletic, and are a great pet for casual hikers, though they might not be able to keep up with fast runners or bikers.
12. Papillon
These bright and friendly dogs fall into the “toy” category, but they are incredibly lively and would be a great companion for sprinters. They get great bursts of energy and are favorites for agility competitions where they get to show their skills off.
If you’re looking for a compact and loyal companion to stick by your side during your next outdoor adventure, consider one of these breeds!
