Service dogs do lots of different jobs, including ones that involve saving lives. Whether they’re training, working, or exercising, these pooches need top-the-line gear, usually including a service dog harness.
Before we go on there’s a quick distinction we need to make. There are really two options for service dogs:
- Harness. May require a service dog patch (usually additional), but can be used as a leash attachment point.
- Vest. Warn as an identification; while they may have a leash attach option it’s not recommended.
Below we’ve listed both our favorite service dog harnesses and vests.

Service Dog Harness Shopping Guide
Service Dogs need to be comfortable to complete different tasks for you. Ergo, a good harness should not restrict the dog’s movement or wear it down with its weight but facilitate its movements. When shopping, consider:
Fit: Some harnesses are snug in front and loose at the back. A good harness should have multiple adjustment points for a snug and comfortable fit. Even better, choose a harness whose size matches the size of your service dog.
Comfortable features: A good harness, especially vest harnesses, should be padded all over the underside to keep the dog comfortable. Because vest harnesses can be hot during summer, ensure that the material is breathable to keep your dog dry.
Ease of Use: You will always have your service dog with you. As such, you need to ensure that the harness is easy to strap on and off. Check the closure mechanism.
Leash attachment: Can you attach a leash and how easy is it to attach the leash? While most harnesses come with a single leash attachment point, some have two points for versatility.
Before You Buy Check Your Local/State/Federal Laws
We don’t have the ability to discuss the laws of every municipality, but please make sure you check to ensure you can legally display a label with “Service Dog,” “Police,” “Search & Rescue,” etc.
If you are unsure, or unable to find the applicable law/statute then you are likely safe with just a plain reflective harness or vest.
